Project Overview

Uganda produces over 400,000 tonnes of groundnuts annually, making it one of East Africa's leading peanut producers. A Kampala entrepreneur — previously running a small retail food shop in Wakiso District — recognized the opportunity to capture oil processing margin that was being lost to imports and large-scale processors.

The client owned a 600 m² urban factory building but had no prior experience running an oil mill. His requirements were clear: low startup cost, simple enough for his team to operate within days, and food-grade output acceptable to Kampala supermarket buyers. He did not want a full chemical refinery — natural roasted peanut oil was his target product.

SinoOil designed a 10 TPD peanut-optimized line around a roasting-pressing-filtration-degumming core. A key design decision was specifying two 6YL-160 screw presses (5 TPD each) rather than a single larger press: this provides full redundancy during maintenance windows — when one press is serviced, the other maintains 50% production. The control panel was labelled in both English and Luganda to support the local operator team.

Simple batch degumming (hot water, no caustic chemicals) removes phospholipids and produces retail-quality natural peanut oil without the need for a neutralizing, bleaching, or deodorizing refinery. This kept capital cost below $30,000 FOB while meeting Kampala supermarket food safety requirements.

Results

Key performance metrics from the first year of operation at the Kampala plant.

45% Oil Yield vs. 42% industry average for peanut screw pressing
4.5 TPD Refined Oil Output refined groundnut oil daily
~$28K Startup Cost (FOB) entry-level investment for 10 TPD
24 mo Payback Period based on Kampala retail groundnut oil price
55% Press Cake Protein sold to livestock farms as premium feed
4 Operators Required trained in 5 days on-site
★★★★★
"I had never run an oil mill before. The SinoOil engineer stayed for 5 days and made sure my team could run every step. The machine is simple to operate. My groundnut oil is now sold in three Kampala supermarkets under my own label. I am expanding to 20 TPD this year."

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about peanut oil milling and this Uganda project.

What is the oil yield of peanut in a screw press oil mill?

Peanut screw press oil yield is typically 42–46% by weight. The Kampala project achieved 45% on locally sourced Ugandan groundnuts with 8–10% moisture. Pre-roasting at 180–200°C and careful moisture conditioning improve yield. Peanuts have 42–52% oil content depending on variety and growing conditions.

How much does a 10 TPD peanut oil plant cost?

A 10 TPD peanut oil plant with roasting, pressing, filtration, and simple degumming costs approximately $25,000–$35,000 FOB China. CIF East Africa (Mombasa or Dar es Salaam port) adds $2,000–$3,000. On-site installation by our engineer and 5-day operator training are included.

What can I do with peanut press cake after oil extraction?

Peanut press cake contains 45–55% protein and 8–10% residual oil. It is a premium animal feed ingredient. In Uganda, the Kampala client sells press cake to local poultry and dairy farms at competitive prices. This by-product revenue can offset 20–30% of operating costs.

Do I need a refinery for a peanut oil plant?

For natural cold-pressed or roasted peanut oil sold without colour/odour modification claims, a full chemical refinery is not required. A simple degumming step (hot water, removes phospholipids) and filtration produce retail-acceptable natural peanut oil. A full refinery (neutralizing, bleaching, deodorizing) is only needed if targeting odourless/colourless refined grade or export markets with strict FFA/colour specifications.

How many workers does a 10 TPD peanut oil mill need?

A 10 TPD peanut oil mill with semi-automatic operation requires 3–5 workers: 1 operator per press, 1 on cleaning/roasting, 1 on filtration/storage. With a manual control panel, no specialist electrical knowledge is needed. Our 5-day on-site training covers all roles.
